Acoustic Guitar Amplifier
The acoustic guitar is an instrument that uses natural acoustic properties to produce and amplify sounds, unlike an acoustic
guitar amplifier. The acoustic guitar relies entirely on design characteristics of the guitar to produce and amplify the sounds produced by plucking a string. Very similar to “thumping” on an empty box, or knocking on a wooden door, these vibrations are either encouraged to propagate (increase) or dampened (discouraged from forming). In short, the sounds that emanate from your acoustic guitar are entirely dependent on the materials and design characteristics of your guitar.
If those characteristics are poor (usually from a cheap or sub-standard guitar), then your music may not be exactly what you would like it to be.
Many people who play the acoustic guitar use what’s known as an acoustic guitar amplifier. Don’t confuse this set up with the electric guitar amplifier; the electric guitar has very little, if any acoustic ability. All sound must be reproduced electronically. Not so with an acoustic guitar amplifier. The natural sounds generated by your guitar are merely amplified by the electronics – like turning up the volume of your acoustic guitar.
If you play for groups larger than can sit close by you, then an acoustic guitar amplifier can make those mellow tones and notes available for all to easily hear.
Acoustic guitar amplifiers don’t have to be expensive, with prices ranging from $75 up to $2,000, if you really get crazy.

Bass Guitar Amplifier
If you’re thinking about getting a bass guitar amplifier, the good news is there are plenty of different performance levels and pricing structures to choose from. The bad news? There are plenty of different performance levels and pricing structure levels for you to choose from! But, this is not a bad thing! Choice is always a great thing, and choice is great when you’re shopping for a bass guitar amplifier.
Are you just starting out, or have you got a “few years” under your belt? If you’re new to bass guitars, you may want to start out
with a relatively inexpensive and low-powered amplifier – in the beginning. The reason behind this suggestion is that, as in many things in life, some folks will drop out of a new hobby like bass guitar playing. You may decide that you don’t want to play “in the background” as most bass players do. Don’t get me wrong – bass guitar is crucial in any band, they just don’t usually get the top billing like lead guitarists do.
Who will you be playing for? If you are playing for small groups, as most of us do when we’re starting out, then the amount of sound you’ll need is relatively small. You wouldn’t want to be hauling around $5,000 worth of guitar electronics around if you’re playing for thirty people – or less. Remember – baby steps, start small. And, your bass guitar amplifier won’t cost you an arm and a leg – good units can cost under $200 for beginners!

Electric Guitar Amplifier
If you play guitar, why would you want to have an electric guitar amplifier? To get your sound out, loud and clear! Acoustic
guitars are nice, but really can’t be heard beyond a few feet. If you’re performing for a large crowd, your acoustic guitar probably won’t be heard beyond the first few feet – unless you’re using an acoustic guitar amplifier. But, if you want the “real deal,” you’ll need an electric guitar amplifier.
If you’re just beginning to look for your own electric guitar amplifier, then you’ll probably be considering solid-state amplifiers, vs. the tube-type units. The tube units can be very nice sounding amplifiers, but they do come with a rather large cost penalty – they’re expensice as compared to solid-stare, transistorized ones.
Portability may be a big issue for you. Do you really want to carry around a huge guitar amplifier head, speakers and all of the accessories you’ll need to be heard? The sound quality and volume is great, but chances are you’ll probably be playing for smaller groups, so a portable unit may just be what you need.
Look for quality, and I’d get one that has an internal power source. Many of the real cheap ones out there are strictly battery-powered. That’s great for playing when there’s not a power outlet available, but most times you will be near an outlet, and the expense of having to buy batteries may drive you to the poor farm!

Tube Guitar Amplifier
If you’re really a purist for your guitar sounds, then you’ll insist upon a tube guitar amplifier to highlight your guitar playing.
Why a tube guitar amplifier? Well, let’s first take a look at the history of the tube guitar amplifier. The first tube-type (the only ones) were not made for guitars. Early radios, and later phonographs made use of the vacuum tube for amplification of sounds by electronic means.
The tube guitar amplifier didn’t become popular until the introduction of electrolytic capacitors and and rectifier tubes allowed the production of economical built-in power supplies that could be plugged into wall sockets, instead of heavy multiple battery packs (Wikipedia). These early amps were used during the Hawaiian music craze of the late 1930’s and early1940’s, where the basic acoustic instrument was amplified by the tube amplifier.
The early tube guitar amplifiers were of relatively low power (typically 15 watts or less) and were short on bass and treble. Bythe 1950’s, tube guitar amplifiers were really hitting their stride as manufacturers such as Fender and Stratocaster began developing the tube amplifier technology and even including special effects such as “vibrato” and “tremelo” that were a feature of early Fender Amps.
The electronic in general began to turn to the transistor for some very basic reasons. First was size – tubes needed a certain amount of space, which made for a large and bulky cabinet. Transistors could be made tiny – now they’re microscopic in size. Tube amplifiers need large amounts of power, and they generate heat. Plus, tubes eventually wear out and have to be replaced – all demerits.
But, guitar sound purists really like the tonal qualities of tube guitar amplifiers, as compared to solid-state units. There’s a strong following of tube guitar amplifiers, and you can even buy brand-new tube guitar amplifiers today.

Guitar Amplifier Head
For today’s modern electric guitar music to be heard loud and clear, there are two types of amplifiers – the combination amplifier and the guitar amplifier head. You really don’t have to be a “techie” to be able to understand the technology. But, it helps if you can play guitar – you can always buy the amplifier, but talent is hard to come by.
1974 Marshall Super Bass 100 Watt Guitar Amplifier Head
RANDALL V2 GUITAR AMP AMPLIFIER HEAD 400 WATT
The guitar amplifier combination unit is an all-in-one unit including amplifier, power transformer, speakers and controls (volume, tone, on-off), etc. This all-in-one amplifier is a popular unit because of its simplicity and portability. And, these amps are ofter fairly cheap to buy. But, they do have some negatives. For one, their sound quality tends to be a little sub-standard, and the sound levels can be a little “quiet” what compared to a guitar amplifier head setup. But, they are very popular.
For those guitar “heads,” the guitar amplified head is the way to go. Since the guitar amplified head doesn’t contain speakers, the internal amplifier can be a much more powerful and precise unit. than the combination amplifiers. And, because the speakers are housed in their own cabinets they can be large enough to handle the increases in power that a guitar amplifier head can produce.
The guitar amplifier head can be more complex to use, and more expensive to buy, but I feel that the pluses far outweigh those negatives. If you perform on stage to a large audience, then you’ll almost have to have a complete guitar amplification setup, so your sound will come through loud and clear.
